A few months ago, a longtime friend of mine convinced me to join DietBet, a new way to lose weight while competing and collaborating with your friends.
The creators of DietBet are calling it “social dieting.” The rules of the game are really simple.
First, you’re given 4 weeks to lose 4% of your body weight. Each game has a set bet you must make to join the game. For my first game, I bet $25.
Second, you must submit proof of your weight to DietBet, but your weight is kept completely confidential from the other participants. You can check in a few times throughout the game to update your progress and add pictures. You can also post any fitness activities you’ve done.
At the end of the four weeks, you post your final weight. If you lost 4% of your body weight, you get to split the total pot with all of the other winners.

DietBet has found that people who use DietBet are 5 times more likely to lose weight than doing it on their own. 90% of all participants lose weight, and the winners average a 9 pound loss at the end of four weeks.
