Taking a Break From CrossFit

After all of my lovey-dovey posts about how much I adore CrossFit, you probably weren’t expecting me to take a break already, were you? Yeah, me neither.


After going to the box for 5 weeks, my knees finally told me they had had enough. I can barely walk up and down stairs or squat to sit on the toilet without a lot of pain. With the Disneyland 10K and Half Marathon just three weeks, I finally came to terms with the fact that I needed to take a break.

Holy cow. I move in 9 days.


So with a move in 9 days and a trip to California in 20 days, I just don’t want to risk further injury. I want to enjoy the races in Disneyland without reaching for the Aleve.

I’m feeling guilty and lazy and sad for taking the break, but it’s what my body needs, and for once, I’m going to listen to my body. I’ll get back to a normal CrossFit schedule in September when I’m all settled in Orlando again. Until then, I’m going to take it easy as best as I can.

Does taking a break from your fitness routine make you feel guilty even though you know you need the break?

    I had to take time off since injuring my knee back in April (thankfully, no tearing, just a bad twist), and I finally ended up seeing a physical therapist, since I had the same thing happen to me last year. She gave me a whole set of stretches, strengthening exercises (turns out I have issues with my IT band and my hip), a set of elastic resistance bands, and I am now the proud owner of a foam roller! Do you think PT might help with the pain?

    I am just starting to get back into the swing of things. And strangely enough, I am not as out of shape as I thought I would be. In fact, I’ve had some good runs. The real test though will be when I run a 5K I have scheduled for next month.

    So sometimes, I think a break is exactly what might be needed. I tried not to feel guilty about it, if you need rest or are in pain, then you need to rest. I’ve actually noticed that sometimes, if I come back after a few days off, I am actually faster! Go figure!

    Girl, no need to feel guity – you’ve got a lot on your plate right now and your body will thank you for doing what you need to do to stay healthy! Also, the FRIENDS gifs made me so happy. :)

    With your races coming up so quickly it is time to take a break from cross fit. Also – I know you have not been running as much as you should. take a break and you can always get back to cross fit when you do not have so many running races on your schedule.
